The first coaching stint was with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2003. Alvarez came to the team in 2002 when he was named the pitching coach for the Greenville Braves, replacing Jim Shildt. Alvarez was a bit of a surprise choice because he had been the minor league roving pitching instructor for a few years. However, he was the pitching coach in five games on July 20th-28th. He then was drawn back to the pitching coach in the bullpen and he served in that capacity until May of 2003. From 2003 through 2006 he served as the roving pitching instructor for the Braves AAA team in Richmond. He returned to the Braves in 2007 and served as the bullpen pitching coach. He spent the entire 2008 season coaching there and during the 2009-2010 seasons was the roving pitching instructor for the Braves AAA team in Myrtle Beach. He was first a roving instructor in Spring Training 2011 and then was the pitching coach for the DSL Braves. He was next the pitching coach for the GCL Braves from 2012-2014. d2c66b5586
