There is no need to install any Microsoft DDK or SDK or any other Microsoft development kit. There is a freeware derivative, maintained by Uwe Sieber, named USBTreeView. Go there, download, unzip, and just run. It is only ~300 kilobytes. It is based on the same Microsoft open-source code, but is much better, with more functionality, and with fewer bugs.
The Universal Serial Bus Viewer (USBView) or usbview.exe is a Windows app that you can use to browse all USB controllers and connected USB devices on your computer. USBView works on all versions of Windows.
The utilities page contains useful programs that provide extended capabilities for application development and manufacturing support. Engineers should take care to validate output from these utilities. Extreme vigilance should be exercised when dealing with programming/download utilities so that device contents are not erroneously deleted or corrupted.

A version of USBView is available for Linux from -usb/. As with the Windows version, this displays a connection tree of all the USB devices connected to the PC. A version compiled for x86_64 Linux can be downloaded here.

I had downloaded an earlier version of the WDK and after I download this one, I am getting 60 compile errors. It seems like the WDK include file is not compatible with the sample APs I download. For example this function in display.c, generates a lot of errors

So I figured I'll start with a fresh system to test my theory: this is a brand new, virgin system. No previous versions of WDK or Visual Studio. I first ran Windows Update so that Visual Studio wouldn't mess itself up in attempting to run updates of its own in the middle of its install. Then I installed Visual Studio. In the first attempt usbview didn't compile. I looked at the toolset used (under Configuration Properties/General/Platform Toolset) and realized it was WDK 8.1. So I changed it to Visual Studio 2015 (v140) which you can find in the pulldown. That fixed the problem. After I changed ZI to Zi (C/C++ /All Options/ Debug Information Format) and Gm to Gm- (Enable Minimal Rebuild), it compiled, linked and ran without an error.

USB View is one of the many debugging tools that ship with the Windows SDK. So, to obtain USB View you need to install Windows SDK. In the installation dialog of Windows SDK, make sure the Debugging Tools option is ticked. After installation, usbview.exe can be found in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Debuggers\x64 directory. This exe can be copied and used on any computer without requiring any installation or dependencies.
