Buddhist monks and artists moved through the caves toward the end of the 3rd century to draw and paint for religious purposes. By the end of the Tang dynasty (AD 712-907), monks and farmers and peasants filled the caves and painted on the walls large murals and gilded statues. Their lively color still makes the caves attractive to artists, tourists and visitors today.
It's a long journey to Dunhuang, particularly if you are driving, and the price of admission, about ¥200 per person for a one-way ticket, isn't small by Chinese standards. One alternative is to stay overnight in Dunhuang (the nightly room rate is much cheaper than the ticket price, and you get to sleep in a soft bed at a proper hotel not an austere hostel), and take a bus from the city to the Grottoes the following day. There are plenty of cheap hostels to choose from, including the Blue Sky Hotel , which has a decent restaurant and bar. Dunhuang is a pleasant enough place to stay, but it's a fairly basic city with no real attractions of its own, save for some nice Buddhist temple.
