Dushra was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She made her debut in the 2010 Tamil romantic-comedy, Kadal, which was written and directed by Selvaraghavan. Vijay, who played the lead role, praised Selvaraghavan and Dushra for their hard work on the film, as they both put in a long time in it. Detractors ciriticismed her role, saying that she was not even given a character. That was however untrue, as her character was well thought-out and well-developed. Vijay said her character was very different to her own and her personal life and did not glamorise the industry. The film performed well at the box office, becoming the second biggest hit of the year, behind Kabali. In 2011, she played a role in the Telugu film Kidnap, alongside Kajal Aggarwal.
