The combat of Elden Ring is similar to the combat of Dark Souls and Breath of the Wild; the player can strike enemies from far away, and enemies are vulnerable to attacks while they're in motion. While fighting, the player can use slash-based attacks or dodge rolls. When the player's stamina is depleted, the game switches to a normal auto-attack, which is less damaging. If the player swings at an enemy but misses, the enemy can strike back. The player can interrupt an enemy's attack, allowing them to counter or dodge. If the player interrupts an enemy's attack and hits him, the enemy's next attack will miss, and if they're attacked while already moving the player has an opening to punish them.[44][62][63][64][65][66]
In fact, I'm confident that if you've ever been frustrated by Dark Souls, then you'd find Elden Ring to be a more tolerable experience. It shares many of Dark Souls' core mechanics and design philosophy, but it also has its own identity. That's not to say it's a better game, because that's not fair. But it's a game I'd recommend to anyone who's been frustrated by Dark Souls, and so I hope this preview was helpful.
